Saturday October 10th I'll be presenting "Conserving our Personal Collections" for the Falmouth Genealogical Society! http://www.falmouthgenealogysociety.com/

Saturday October 24th I'll be at the Ukrainian Historical and Educational Center of NJ for their Nashi Predky Our Ancestors Family History Conference presenting "It's like Velcro: Autosomal DNA for Genealogy." https://www.ukrhec.org/civicrm/event/info?reset=1&id=22

Finishing off the weekend Sunday October 25th in NY City at The Genealogy Event, GenGen DNA day with "An Introduction to Genetic Genealogy Testing" and "DNA for the Genealogical Proof Standard." Genetics over Generations

It's a schedule designed to keep me out of the pubs!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05026995177421537374noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2552793011292949236.post-54415016620362033022015-09-22T06:12:00.000-07:002015-09-22T06:13:11.817-07:00Random notes and musingsThis is going to be like a Mark Patinkin (see Mark Patinkin at ProJo) column with various, miscellaneous points that aren't really connected. I think Bill Reynolds calls it "For what it's worth," but here goes:

Maybe I'm the only one who doesn't yet know this, but I was thrilled to discover a ProScanner 1100 at the Rhode Island Historical Society Library, now a Smithsonian Institution affiliate and renamed the Mary Elizabeth Robinson Research Center. Don't forget a jump drive! Although they thoughtfully provide them for sale. Excellent for the vital records and newspaper collections.

The Providence City Archives is getting the positive publicity it deserves due to the fabulous work of Paul Cambell and his staff. (Treasure Trove of History 9/9/2015)

I've been to several town halls recently and the key thing to ask is for the vault inventory. Most have a list of stuff that is not accessible in the land evidence books, but they will let you check out the list and request things that may be of interest to your project. I've also been taking pictures of the vault inventories and converting them to PDFs so when I go back to that town hall, I can check the list before I go and plan my research more efficiently.

Trying to put all the sources I've ever searched in RI into a spreadsheet is NOT an easy task. My goal has been to develop my own source lists from all my old research projects, but there isn't an easy way to export my genealogical database Master Source file. I'll figure it out eventually, but the idea is to be able to quickly identify and sort sources for research projects in certain towns and be able to sort by town, type of record, time period of records in addition to the actual source citation information. Sort of an annotated bibliography for the state of RI. If I ever finish, I'll let you know. I'm sure there's an easier way to do this, but that would require me to learn even MORE new stuff, new programs. I thought computers were supposed to make life easier.

Did I mention that I want to sort it by repository? Shoot. Me. Now.

There is so much information available for genealogy on the internet that my head is going to explode, especially the blogosphere. Is that a word?

Renovations at the repository that you REALLY need to get into, that's been closed for 6 months or more, ALWAYS take longer than projected. Always.

The only thing worse than the continued closure is the lack of updates on when they might reopen.

I have no idea how anyone is able to maintain all of their online presences or whatever they're called when there are so many. Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, blogs, websites, APG profile, BCG profile. I can barely update my website, and the new website design is something I've been putting off for six months! How am I supposed to get any actual work done?

I have 3 speaking engagements next month and am very excited to be developing 2 new talks! I'll be at the Falmouth Genealogical Society speaking on "Conserving our Personal Collections."

I'll be heading to NJ for the Ukrainian Historical and Educational Center of NJ for their Nashi Pedky Family History Group Conference presenting "It's Like Velcro: Autosomal DNA for Genealogy."

I'll be at #GenGen in NY City with2 newish ones: "An overview of DNA Tests for Genealogy" and "DNA as part of the Genealogical Proof Standard," as part of Genetics over Generations, the renamed Genealogy Event.

Now that my random list is finished, I have to go make sure that I cross post this to 14 other platforms. Maybe that's why I have a recurring activity on schedule: "update online materials."Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05026995177421537374noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2552793011292949236.post-59933697760960906002015-09-08T10:24:00.001-07:002015-09-08T10:24:54.378-07:00Treasure trove that makes more work, but it's funA couple of weeks ago, I received a wonderful cache of family photos from my mum-in-law, and have been starting to sort out who's who, and learn more about identifying people. Not being an expert with years of experience like Maureen Taylor, The Photo Detective, a fellow Rhode Islander, I have to start from scratch. But I've learned a few things along the way that I thought I would share.

1. Know the source of the photos.
The pictures that I received were people that my mom-in-law didn't know. Why? Because they were from her husbands' family. My father-in-law died in the spring, and when she was going through all of her photos looking for pictures for the collages her grandchildren assembled, she found a box of photos she had forgotten about. And then, of course, my father-in-law wasn't there to identify them, so I know that they must be related to his family, not hers.

2. Ask surviving relatives to identify the people before it's too late.
My father-in-law has one surviving sister, so she is on my list of people I need to sit down with to identify the pictures. She will recognize most of them and if fact may have already told me who they are when we identified other photos, which brings me to the next point...

3. Compare them with photos of people you already know.
Many years ago, I took pictures of my aunt's mass card collection, the same aunt who is my father-in-law's surviving sister, and should know who's in the pictures. The mass cards had been collected by her mother over the course of her lifetime. Many of the mass cards have photos on them and I can pick out at least one of the men from my unknown photos and match it to my identified photos. From there, I can make some pretty good guesses about the surrounding folks, based on if it's a family group photo, a wedding photo or whatever.

4. Cruise the internet
Using Ancestry.com, I was able to connect to a cousin who has a copy of the same image I have, and guess what? Hers is identified! So use the web to find pictures and make sure that you share the ones you have. It's the best kind of back-up when photos are widely distributed among disparate family members, even if they are only tangentially related. Additionally, many of the photos I received had the photographer and the location on them. Use that information correlated with what you know about a family to help you with identification. If you know the photo has a Maine photographer, track down the families you know lived in Maine at some point, and go from there.

And now, a selection of some fabulous, soon to be identified photos:

I'm sure everyone has stumbled upon unusual items as they've been researching their family history, but this one was a first for me. Looking for obituaries is fun, and I have a fabulous resource available at the Rhode Island Historical Society Library, now known as the Mary Elizabeth Robinson Resource Center. They have an excellent collection of RI newspapers on microfilm, including the local weekly papers, and small town papers. I came across this and just about fell out of my chair.

Someone had cut out a death notice from the paper, and that was the copy that they made the microfilm from, so all of the copies of the microfilm are missing that death notice. I could probably go back and figure out which death notice was missing if it appeared on more than one date. But I am always amazed at the weird things we can come across doing research in Rhode Island. Or anywhere else!
The town has tax records for every year until the 1810s (when I stopped looking!). Some of them have been transcribed by Catherine Hey in the Rhode Island Roots special edition of "Gleanings from Rhode Island Town Records: Early Coventry Record" (RI Roots, April 2010), but her coverage is from 1756 to 1769. There were more, and the ones that I was particularly fascinated by were the ones that covered the years from 1770 to 1800. For every year, you will find two different books, a town rate book, and a state rate book, since the town was responsible for sending money collected from landowners to pay its share of state expenses, and the town also needed a separate income source for its own expenses. For some years, you may also find an estate rate book. Some of the books contain poll counts (nice for a head count of adult males that may still be living at home) and how much each person owed in taxes. It's difficult to track how much a person's estate might have grown based on the taxes paid, since the rates changed, as did the currency value, but the thing I like best about tax books is that you can see men coming of age, dying off, moving into town and buying property.

Here's the first page of the State rate book for 1785

The earliest ones are grouped alphabetically by the first letter of the first name, and the later are grouped by the first letter of the last name, after that it's just a seemingly random list. By looking at a series of years, though, it looks as if they used previous years tax books to write the new ones, so the lists appear very similar from year to year, with the main changes being related to people who may have died during the year, and naming their widows in the place of the men who died. It also appears that the folks may have been grouped geographically by surname, but that's just a hunch on my part.

There's one other interesting type of Coventry tax books that shows "Value of Estates." I presume that this is really more of a list of landowners and an approximate value of the property that they own, but it also lists the heirs of particular estates, so you can see who inherited the property. This is an example from 1780.

Value of Estate Book for 1780, Coventry Town Clerk's Office, Coventry, RI.

I'm off to look for a similar series of tax books for some other Rhode Island towns including Tiverton and Portsmouth for another project, hoping to solve some more brick wall problems with tax list data. Wish me luck!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05026995177421537374noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2552793011292949236.post-7009807343936667212015-06-16T10:15:00.000-07:002015-07-07T08:42:40.245-07:00Too many GreensI've been working on a project for the surname Green/Greene in Coventry between 1750 and 1800. This is a time period in Rhode Island research that can be ridiculously challenging since there were few vital records kept, and the best way to establish relationships or identity is by using land and court records. So I toddled off the the Coventry Town Hall to look through the land records which date back to about 1748.

Does anyone know how many male Greens there are in Coventry between 1750 and 1780? Do you have any idea how many land transactions there were? I counted 34 index entries per page and about 50 pages of Greenes for grantor entries up to the year 1845 which is more than 1700 deed entries (and that's just the Grantor index). There have to be over 40 unique individuals with the surname Greene in the area during that time period. When you look at the transactions of just the males named Benjamin Greene in the Grantee Deed Index there are over 30 entries. How does one sort out who's who, how they're related, and which ones to focus on when there are so many?

I've been using 2 techniques (mind maps and spreadsheets) with moderate success for distinguishing all Greene and how they are related. Often, the men or the people taking the information identify their fathers to distinguish among the 3 James, 3 Joseph and 2 Ebenezer Green's all living concurrently in the town. I had to start somewhere, so I used mind mapping software to help me visualize various families and how they may all be connected. Taking information from a number of different sources I consolidated it into one picture using sources for a specific time period (of course, don't ask me which information came from which source, this is just a visual to sort out who's who on a general scale, I'd have to go back to document everything.) Below is one of the mind maps I created for Greene's in Coventry in the decade between 1740 and 1750.

Mind Map of Greenes in Coventry

I then did it for a later time period when there were even more individuals. In 1778, there were more than 30 taxable inhabitants in Coventry, all with the surname of Greene. Some were women (which helps), and based on how much they were taxed, I could determine if they owned real estate or not which I color coded. This could be helpful when searching for deeds (see below).

X Map of Greenes in 1778

While I have only touched the surface of mapping, I can imagine creating a mind map for each source with all the information contained in it. I can imagine shifting the families around to then overlay them onto a map of town to determine if they group geographically. Fortunately, Coventry covers the largest amount of area of any town in
Rhode Island so reconstructing land parcels using physical maps might
prove useful as well. But which specific deeds should I look at?

My thought was that as I looked through the Grantee index, I could often distinguish individual land sales from the distribution of an estate by looking for "et al" or "administrator," suggesting that the land sale had something to do with a probate. While the probate records are pretty good, if someone didn't leave a will, it's often difficult to determine who the heirs were, despite the fact that the estate still had to be divided amongst the heirs. So I went through the index and chose all the grantor deeds that contained "et al" and put them into a spreadsheet that I could then sort in a number of ways.
There were more than 70 entries. Then, by sorting them by volume and page, I could see which individuals mentioned in an "et al" deed sorted together, were found in the same volume and page, meaning that they appeared in the same deed together and were probably related. I can later determine whether they were all related using other documentary evidence. It worked pretty well. I could also sort based on year, or grantee, to organize my research plan and focus on the years when I knew someone died, or a significant first name, or whatever.

While my Green project isn't quite finished, I hope that other folks working in towns with dozens of individuals with the same surname can use these techniques to sort out family groups to focus your research to find what you're looking for!
While it's been a while since my last visit, there are some very cool items that have been donated by members and other people who want to share and preserve family history materials.

There are 2 very interesting scrapbooks of photographs, one of portraits of members of the Darling family and one with photos of Spraguesville, Smithfield and other locations in the 1910's and 1920's.
There are typescript transcriptions of talks that have been presented to the RI Genealogical Society meetings, and a number of miscellaneous folders. These materials are in fact quite different from the books and journals that are part of the RIGS Library, which has published materials, not these unique, unpublished materials. There may be letters written to the society, requesting information, or collections of obituaries, diaries, insurance papers, just about anything that can be found in manuscript collections, so make sure that you check them out for glimpses into your family's history.
I have a backlog of posts, email and tasks to complete and the world keeps turning and won't let me get off yet!

But what a great conference! As one of the Program Tri-Chairs, along with Marian Pierre-Louis and Maureen Taylor, I was happy to hear so many positive things about the speakers and the talks. There were some flubs and miscues, but for the most part everything was great. It always amazes me how many dedicated volunteers and how many grueling hours the various committees put in to pull it off. As I sit here trying to recover, the planning for NERGC 2017 in Springfield has already begun. I'll probably not be as actively involved for the next one, but it was a great experience.

My talks were pretty well received, though I have to consider renaming the one entitled "GPS for Genealogy: Another Kind of Navigation" since when I began with the disclaimer that it was about the Genealogical Proof Standard, and not Global Positioning Systems, several of the people got up and walked out of the room. Oops. I got to speak to a very large group for my talk "Which Autosomal DNA test is right for YOU?" and had some of the best in the business in the audience, including The Genetic Genealogist (http://www.thegeneticgenealogist.com/) himself, Blaine Bettinger, who I finally got to meet.

I met a bunch of cool people working at 2 of the booths in the exhibit hall, APG and BCG, which were conveniently across from one another. And my other favorite activity was the Ancestors Road Show where I met 6 fabulous genealogists with questions about RI research. I should have told them to check out my blog...

The other new activity that I participated in this time was the Special Interest Group, Becoming a Professional Genealogist. Lots of budding professionals were there, talking about taxes and LLCs, and of course, becoming a Certified Genealogist, though there is often some confusion about the difference between being a CG and being a professional.

I can't even choose the highlights! Probably the most significant was meeting old genealogy peeps and making new ones, and getting to listen to some of the best speakers in the business (Judy Russell comes to mind!). That and being able to sleep with no cats, dogs and kid in the room (I treated myself to 2 nights in Providence!)But now, it's back to the old grind, scaring up cool stuff relating to RI genealogy for all to see.
So much fun to be had and so many fabulous talks to see by fabulous speakers like Lisa Louise Cooke and Judy Russell, not to mention D. Josh Taylor, David Lambert and ME!

So what is my plan? First, I'll be volunteering in the exhibit hall at both the Board for Certification of Genealogists booth and the Association for Professional Genealogists New England Chapter booth, so drop by and learn about these two fabulous groups. And make sure to drop by the Rhode Island Genealogical Society's booth too! My other favorite RI genealogical society always puts together a great booth in the exhibit hall, AFGS, and they have great books and French-Canadian research goodies for sale.

I'm really looking forward to the opening session, with John McNiff portraying William Blackstone, one of the first European settlers in RI, and the social hour and society fair in the evening. I figure I can even get to some of the Thursday talks in between!

I'll be at the "Becoming a Professional Genealogist" Special Interest Group on Thursday night in Room 553B, so drop by and talk about some of the skills you need to have the BEST job in the whole world!

The biggest items on my to-do list are two talks I'm presenting on Saturday, "GPS for Genealogy: Another Kind of Navigation", about using the Genealogical Proof Standard to solve complex evidence cases and the second "Which Autosomal DNA Test is Right for YOU?" about genetic genealogy and the autosomal DNA tests offered at the 3 major testing companies.

Don't miss out on RI talks by Cherry Fletcher Bamberg, FASG and Nathaniel Lane Taylor, FASG!

Even though I only live 20 minutes away, I'm going to stay downtown at one of the conference hotels so that I don't miss out on any of the fun, impromptu meetings that happen when almost 1000 genealogists get together for 3 days. Hope to see you there!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05026995177421537374noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2552793011292949236.post-80896798478075583042015-03-31T08:32:00.000-07:002015-03-31T08:33:09.120-07:00Newpapers! Newspapers are great for reverse genealogy or finding living relatives, and
after my trip to the Forensic Genealogy Institute (where I learned more about
the application of genetic genealogy results) last week, it seems appropriate
to talk about the newspapers that are available here in Rhode Island.

Obituaries have great information that can be used to track down living
relatives, but also for finding out more about ancestors, such as finding
funeral home and cemeteries. Military service and employment may be
mentioned, leading to more sources to fill out the lives of our
ancestors and families.

In Rhode Island, the best place to find newspapers is at the RI Historical
Society Library. (http://www.rihs.org/)
They have almost continuous collections of every newspaper published in RI. The
biggest and longest running is the Providence Journal and while most recent
obituaries appear in this paper, there are smaller more regional papers that
are worth a look, too. Each town usually has it's own local paper, and if you can't
find a death reported in the ProJo, the next step is to look for the local
paper. Most local papers can be found at RIHSL or at the local public library. In fact, when the historical society was closed for a year, I trucked around the state to find newspapers in the local libraries.

And it's not just about finding obituaries. There can also be interesting
stories about more prominent (or naughty!) ancestors. Here's an article related to the one above:

Pawtuxet Valley Daily Times, "Strikers Storm Natick Mill" West Warwick, RI, 1 Feb 1922, pg 1.

The man arrested who was indirectly responsible for starting the riot is the same man, Michele Lautieri, my great-grandfather, as the one in the obituary.

There are also retrospectives in some of the papers such as "25 years ago today" and "50 years ago today" and the smaller newspapers may mark significant anniversary celebrations of local people.

They may also have pictures that you can use to get a better idea of what the neighborhood was like, or what the effect of a significant world or local event had in an area. The Natick Mill fire in 1941 in West Warwick, RI, was a significant local event that had an enormous economic impact, forcing mill workers to find other jobs. Michele, who died later in 1941, had found work at the Anthony Mill after the fire as mentioned in the obituary. It was also significant to my family research, since oral family history tells of how Michele Lautieri was taken away in the night to be questioned by the police after the fire. (A rabble-rouser, sort of, he was under suspicion for arson, based on being an activist during the 1920's mill strikes, see photo above!) All this information and more can be found in newspapers!
The Rhode Island Supreme Court Judicial Records Center has
naturalization records from all Rhode Island county courts, including District

There is a gap in Providence County Court records. The District and Superior court records from about 1894-1917 are
found at the NARA Northeast Regional Center in Waltham, Massachusetts. All the
other counties have continuous records with no apparent gaps. The last records date to about
1982 when the Reagan administration changed the rules regarding naturalization
record keeping.

There are typically three kinds of naturalization documents

There are no certificate of naturalization stubs archived here.

The earliest document that I saw was from Providence
County, a naturalization petition for John William Larrant of France from 1793, but I can't find the copy I made. The main components of the petition were as follows: the name of the petitioner, his address and occupation of
“gentleman”, the court petitioned, his country of origin and date of
application, as well as a description of his residency in the United States. There
is little information beyond that he has been “demeaning himself as a good and
peaceable inhabitant of the said United States.”

More detailed record keeping of naturalizations developed over time, and as I was researching my fascist grandmother's first papers, I checked out a bunch of the Declarations of Intentions (often referred to as "first papers") for the Superior Court of Kent County in the 1920's.

These bound volumes contain a single document for each person who declared they wanted to be naturalized. The information they contain includes the person's name, a physical description, date and place of birth, from where and when they emigrated, their spouses name and birthplace and a signature or mark.

While I didn't find my fascist grandmother's Declaration, I did find her mother's. My great-great-grandmother, Dorotea Marinelli, filed a declaration of intention at age 85 in 1942. There was a lot of pressure following the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor for Italian immigrants to avoid discrimination by applying for citizenship.

I love these documents, because even if the individuals didn't follow through to become a naturalized citizen, there is a lot of really great genealogical information to be found on the first papers.
Here's an example of a record from the "Court of Judicature Assize and General Gaol Delivery" from King's County in 1769. This court was one of the precursors to the Supreme Court of Rhode Island.

Court of Judicature Assize and General Gaol Delivery, King's County [Washington County], RI, Vol. B, 1763-1782, April 1769, pg 202, RI Supreme Court Judicial Records Center, Pawtucket, RI.

This case summary names William Sachem, James Niles and a variety of other Narragansett Indians in a land dispute relating to 30 acres in Charlestown. Unfortunately, many of the case files associated with these record books are inaccessible, so this is the only information related to this case. This case refers to another court record, from the Inferior Court of Common Pleas in 1768, which has more information about the dispute.

In another case from the Court of Common Pleas, James Niles, Junior, an Indian man and Cooper, sues Michael Toby for trespass, but that it was later withdrawn.
By the careful use of court records, you can often find interesting information relating to an ancestor's occupation, residence, neighbors and community. In colonial Rhode Island research in particular, I have found that court records and land records are some of the best resources when establishing relationships since so few vital records are available.

Next week, some cool examples of naturalization records found at the RI Supreme Court Judicial Records Center.
They have civil, criminal and divorce court records from 1671 to 1900 and naturalization records until 1982. While many of the court case file papers are unavailable due to water and mold damage, the indexes and record books are available for all five counties. The nice part is that for court records up to 1900, they are all housed in one place, which makes searching a breeze, and you don't have to truck around the state hitting all the different courts. The strange thing about RI, or rather one of the many strange things, is that counties as a geopolitical unit are rarely important. Most records that genealogists use frequently are held at the town level, and the main exception is for court records. The five RI counties, Bristol, Newport, Providence, Kent and Washington all have plaintiff and defendent indexes as well as record books for each type of court.

There are two levels of civil court records that I usually search, the Court of Common Pleas and the Supreme Court record books, but the names of these courts have changed over time. It's always amazing to me how many folks are sued, and counter-sued, usually over unpaid debts and land disputes in colonial RI. More recent materials can also be found, as well. One of the more unusual books that I viewed as I was tracking down a family story about a mill riot and an arrest (covered in my seminar entitled "Broken Threads") was the 4th District Court at East Greenwich criminal court dockets that summarize the every day criminal court's dispensing of justice. Some of the fascinating information found in this book includes the person making the complaint, the "respondent" or defendent, the arresting officer, the court date, the judgement, court fees and disposition.

In 1922, for example, there was enforcement of drunk driving when John J. Iera was found guilty of "operating automobile while intoxicated" and he was fined $100 and charged $6.80 in court costs. There are records of assaults with dangerous weapons, domestic abuse, as well as info about who posted the bail bonds for the defendents. I did not find any court record for my arrested, mill riot-causing grandfather, but the charges may have been dropped and he may not have had to go to court.
So, as you're researching your Roots in Rhode Island and thing you may have one of those mlill rioters in your family, don't forget to check the court records, and remember that they are organized by county, not town! I'll show some more treats that found in the RI court records in upcoming posts.
The Langworthy Public Library (http://langworthylibrary.org/) in Hope Valley, Rhode Island. Hope Valley is one of the many villages in Hopkinton, and this little place has an amazing quantity of high quality manuscript materials.

Oh well, you can't have it all, or not all at the same time!

There are still wonderful resources to explore relating to your RI ancestors. If you have any relatives who were at the Rhode Island House of Corrections, the Hospital for the Insane, or at the RI State Infirmary, also known as the Almshouse, there are some truly wonderful resources available.

While the vast majority of the records the Hospital for the Insane are missing (purportedly in someone's basement), the RIHSL has one of the earliest ledgers, from 1895-1898 (Rhode Island Historical Society Library- Rhode Island State Institutions Records.) If you had an ancestor committed to the asylum, you can do a page by page search for their admission during that time.

If your ancestor spent any time in the state penal system, there are the discharges for the House of Corrections (MSS 231, SG 1, Series 2, Vol. 19). One name jumped out at me as I was scrolling through the pages; Emma Skuce was repeatedly incarcerated in State Prison and County Jail. The record of her death is also found in the book, on 15 Nov 1915. If you received a death certificate from the RI state archives which give the House of Corrections as the location of death, you could check the ledger for the original record and determine the reason for incarceration which could lead you to court records and learning more about the reasons for their stay at the "state farm."

If you have an ancestor who died at the "State Hospital" in "Howard," this is actually a section of Cranston that was designated for a variety of state institutions including the poor house, the state prison and the Hospital for the Insane. Even today, the State Dept. of Health, State Dept of Corrections and a number of other state departments have offices and facilities there. Many of the admissions ledgers are available at the RI State Archives, and can provide fascinating detail about our poor ancestors and the treatment of various illness. Reading through these ledgers, it was fascinating to note that whole families of children would come in to the hospital for "T&A," tonsils and adenoid surgery. Another ledger has "Patient Histories" which records why and how people arrived at the hospital.

With a wealth of resources available for our less than illustrious ancestors, we should take advantage of the records available to add more interest to our family histories.
Since its recent closure (see their website /http://www.rihs.org/), with deadlines looming, I have been forced (let's say challenged, instead) to seek out alternative repositories for my research. I've already posted about how much I love the Providence Public Library, but to avoid a trip downtown, where parking is difficult, I went off to the library at Rhode Island College. http://www.ric.edu/adamslibrary/. I had never been, but it was their school break, and they had one of the ProScan 2000 microfilm readers for my perusal of the Providence Journal. While I didn't have time to explore, it is definitely on my list of places to return to, particularly for it's special collections, The Cape Verdean Collection (http://ric.libguides.com/content.php?pid=179008&sid=1506076) and the Joseph R. Muratore Collection of Italian American materials (http://www.ric.edu/adamslibrary/assets/muratore.pdf).

My other trip was to Woonsocket, both the American-French Genealogical Society (http://www.afgs.org/) library, and the Woonsocket Harris Public Library (http://www.woonsocketlibrary.org/). While I have been to AFGS many times, the addition of the Family History Center, new computer databases and some lovely new donations (that I am not allowed to reveal), their collection of French Canadian and RI and MA resources is fantastic. I also found a unique source for records of the Catholic Diocese of Providence. Check them out for yourself, because I was amazed at the parish records they have on film. The public library was also a wonderful discovery. While I usually would use the microfilm at the RIHSL for the local newspaper, The Call, RIHSL does not have a ProScan microfilm reader to digitize the films. Everything on microfilm has to be printed. The digital microfilm reader at the Woonsocket Public Library was a boon! No printing out the pages and taking them home to scan. A bit of a drive, but perhaps more efficient in the long run.

While it's not much fun to truck around RI in the winter snow (and it snowed on my way to Woonsocket), the unfortunate closure of my main research library has helped expand my horizons, and forced me to be creative and more adventurous for my research, and that's not a bad thing, at all. Maybe I'll find some other new places while the library remains closed, and I'll have something new to write about!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05026995177421537374noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2552793011292949236.post-52404029553264314472012-09-23T10:37:00.003-07:002012-09-23T10:37:44.158-07:00Martitime History and NewportI've been enjoying all the beauty that Rhode Island can offer this summer, as my family bought a sailboat and spent the summer out on the water. Sailing on Narragansett Bay reminds me of how significant maritime trade and the navy have been to my home state. The maritime history of RI has left records all over the state including the admiralty records at the RI State Archives (including letters of marque for privateers during the Revolution), whaling ships logs in the Nicholson Collection at the Providence Public library, and a host of materials at the Newport Historical Society (http://www.newporthistorical.org/).

Newport has a fascinating history as a haven for Plymouth Colony rebels who wanted religious freedom. The area is the home of the Seventh Day Baptists, a haven for Quakers and boasts the oldest Jewish Synagogue in the US. And Newport was one of the largest ports on the east coast. As early as the late 1600's, Newport has been a significant port of call first for the Royal Navy, then for trade along the eastern seaboard.

The Newport Historical Society has recently updated their website to include a list of their significant manuscript and special collections. They have an amazing amount of genealogical material on Newport families, and an emphasis on the maritime history of Newport in the form of ship's logs, diaries and merchant's records. The staff is fabulous, and the building itself is an historical gem. They are cataloguing their collectionsr and putting more online and have found a bunch of treasures lurking within their collections. Check out their "FOUND!" page to see some of their unique treasures! http://www.newporthistorical.org/index.php/category/found/

If you have Newport families make sure that you check out this fabulous gem hidden in downtown of one of the oldest seaports in the United States!
In July 2010, the City of Providence hired a new archivist, Paul Campbell. He has an impressive resume as an author and archivist including 8 years as the Director at the Rhode Island Historical Society. Since he started the improvements to their website have been phenomenal (check it out at http://www.providenceri.com/archives). He has been delving into the far reaches of this vast repository (you'd be amazed at the stuff they've found so far, including the Providence Town Charter from 1648! See a picture of it here: http://www.providenceri.com/archives/providence-city-archivist-to-speak-on-recent-0) and assembling finding aids for their materials. He's been restoring town records, with help from various organizations including the Rhode Island Genealogical Society (yeah, that's a shameless plug for my home genealogy society, check out http://www.providenceri.com/archives/early-town-council-record-book-restored-0). If you have old Rhode Island families from Providence or the surrounding area including Glocester, Scituate, North Providence, Johnston, etc, you should really check them out. They have maps, city directories, town meeting records (some of which are published in the 2006 and 2007 issues of Rhode Island Roots: Gleanings, by RIGS, though 2007 is out of print), aldermen papers, photographs, licenses and vital records (the turn of the century peddlers licenses are amazing). Genealogists will find the Naturalization and Voter records helpful, along with the reform school records. If you do house histories, the building permits might be a goldmine for your research. There are ton of other fun, quirky and potentially valuable family history research materials here.

And they're finding new things every day. They've gotten experienced archivists, historians, librarians and students to volunteer their skills to help organize and catalog the materials. Some are even being digitized for access via the web (see their photo gallery at http://www.providenceri.com/photogallery).
So check it out, be creative and see if they have anything that you can use to flesh out your family history.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05026995177421537374noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2552793011292949236.post-5117414676356206982012-01-06T12:12:00.000-08:002012-01-06T12:12:56.262-08:00Little Rhody's Manuscript CollectionsThe most fabulous new site that I've been using lately for my research is RIAMCO, The Rhode Island Archives and Manuscript Collections Online (http://dl.lib.brown.edu/riamco/). This website allows you to search several manuscript collections at repositories all over RI with one website. The website is sponsored by a consortium of 10 members including Brown University, Providence College, the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island Historical Society and others.

It's a great way to search for unique items related to the history of RI and our families from one search engine, rather than going to search each one independently. Many universities and colleges have fabulous special collections that are available for research, and a search of those resources should be included in any "reasonably exhaustive" search for information. They may not be well publicized, but you never know what unique gems you may discover.

There are some caveats to using RIAMCO that I've discovered already. Not everything that the participating members have in their collections "pops up" when you do a search. And not all the RI repositories that have unique collections are represented. For example, while the RI State Archives has a variety of fabulous and unique manuscript collections (particularly those relating to Narragansett tribal affairs), they may not all show up in your search. The information that you get out is only what the consortium members have added to the database. Additionally, there are some possible repositories that we can think of that aren't represented such as Rhode Island College, and the West Warwick Public Library (they have a really fabulous photograph collection!) But, I think what it does is that it reminds us that there are a number of special collections that deserve attention in our family history research, and that can provide in-depth and unique materials that can make our work come alive.
I hope so, because now we'll talk about the last two that are available from FamilySearch.org.

The 1925 RI State census is another great way to get additional information relating to your family research. In fact, this census is quite nice since it puts families into family groups, similar to the US censuses. Here is an example for a family in West Warwick, RI (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11773-153700-72?cc=1532195)

The information is very limited, but the people are generally grouped by family, you can see who was living in a particular house, and their ages. Another interesting bit of info is whether or not any of the immigrants had been naturalized. Using this information, you can narrow a search for naturalization papers for RI residents a bit more by splitting the gap between the 1920 and 1930 US Federal census.

The 1935 RI state census is much more like the 1915, where you need to reassemble the family groups. Check out this punch card for Angiolina Lautieri. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11614-25664-36?cc=1529126&wc=6887664

They were using punch cards as an early computer system to tabulate the data that they collected. This census is not as helpful as the 1925 in terms of the family groupings, but some additional information, such as the date of birth (FYI, Angiolina's had 3 years shaved off her age!) may help fill out some of that vital information.

Probably one of the most useful aspects of the 1935 RI state census, is that it can help pinpoint people's locations, so that you can find them in the 1940 US Federal Census before the name index is completed. (Getting ready for the 1940 US Federal Census is another story for another day!).

I hope that everyone with RI people in the late 19th and early 20th century takes advantage of using FamilySearch.org's offerings of the RI State Censuses.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05026995177421537374noreply@blogger.com0Rhode Island, USA41.5800945 -71.477429141.1186115 -71.8867726 42.0415775 -71.068085599999989tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2552793011292949236.post-54708781895726247612011-10-31T10:29:00.000-07:002011-10-31T10:31:29.394-07:00Great State CensusesOne of the interesting things about RI researchers that I've run into is that they are often looking for those old 17th and 18th century families. If that's what you're searching for, skip to the end, because this post is about a fabulous resource that's free online for those of us with 19th and 20th century RI ancestors.

My RI families are late 19th century and 20th century immigrants, and many of the published materials deal with the older, Roger Williams era families. For those of us with immigrant ancestors from Ireland, French-Canada, Italy, and the Azores, the Family History Library has digitized and indexed the 1885, 1905, 1915, 1925 and 1935 RI state censuses. The 1895 census doesn't exist. The other censuses, however, can be searched online at

https://www.familysearch.org/

The index will bring you directly to the images of the census that you're interested in. There are funky things to know about each census year, for example, the 1885 census list men and women in separate records, so it doesn't put people into family units. But by using the 1880 US Federal census to fill out family groups, you can then search the 1885 for each family member. The census will give District, family number and number in family as well as relationship to head of family, so you can cross reference the people you know, and perhaps find some that you don't. It also gives occupation and number of months attending school. Check it out for one of my guys Frank E. Noyes https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-9832-42147-47?cc=1794115

The 1905 State Census entry of Frank E. Noyes is on index cards and covers 2 pages (don't forget the 2nd page!). https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-12663-12353-19?cc=1542866&wc=6068656
This census gives additional information such as years living in RI, religious affiliation, whether the individual is a registered voter, etc. For women, it identifies the number of children, as well as the number of children living as of June 1, 1905. All good information for our family history. See https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-12660-56890-92?cc=1542866&wc=6068925
for Frank's wife, Dora's, 2nd page, for more info about her parent's birthplaces.

For immigrants, it can be great to know how long they've been in the US, and other information about their employment, naturalization status and how long they've been in RI, if different from how long they've been in the US.

In the next post, we'll check out the 1925 and 1935 RI censuses, see you then!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05026995177421537374noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2552793011292949236.post-27526895811469853632011-10-24T08:05:00.000-07:002011-10-24T08:05:38.613-07:00The Providence Journal BulletinThe local RI newspaper, The Providence Journal, has been doing a ton of advertising lately, radio, TV, in their own pages (I wonder if they have to buy space?). They have changed their website, and now offer an electronic version you can get for your Ipad or phone or whatever. While that's all fabulous for the 21st century, for RI genealogists, the most significant thing about the ProJo (as we locals call it), is that it has been publishing in some form for over 200 years.

One of the lesser known RI resources that I love is the daily index to the Providence Journal that is at the Providence Public Library (http://www.provlib.org/node/108). It runs from 1900 to 2004 and can help you find articles published contemporaneously with events in RI history. The microfilm collection maintained by the library is a complete run from 1829 to the present. And while you're at the library, you can access articles on their computers from 1983 to the present. Through newspaper research, we can find marriage notices, deaths and obituaries, and local stories about war heroes, political villains (we tend to have a lot of those locally), and just your average Rhode Islander, waiting out a blizzard or hurricane. We can access history as it's being made, and find things that may have been left out of the textboooks (and when it comes to RI research, that tends to happen a lot).

While getting the bare bones of names and dates for the vital information about our ancestors is the beginning of our genealogical research, putting the meat on the bones by understanding the historical context of our ancestors lives, how they may have been influenced by major events occurring in their communities, is what helps us to see them as real people, living real lives. They were affected by storms and economic downturns, and some may have even influenced the news themselves, and it's worthwhile to take a peak at what was happening in RI during their lifetimes. It may help us understand their motives and moves, marriages and misdemeanors.

As I work on a project about my great-grandmother, I started with the family oral history about her being active in politics, being a leader in her community and influencing striking workers at the local mill. I plan to use the index to find the written accounts of the tumultuous time during the Natick Mill Strike, to put together a better picture of the woman, her strengths and weaknesses, and her trials and triumphs. I'm sure that even if she is not mentioned specifically, by reading newspaper accounts, I'll know what the local authorities were saying to the media, and what was the general mood on the street. And that, is what makes genealogy into "family history" and make our ancestors come alive.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05026995177421537374noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2552793011292949236.post-13732571071527118882011-09-30T08:17:00.000-07:002011-09-30T08:17:58.011-07:00Genealogy in the Ocean StateGenealogy in Rhode Island is unique, much like Rhode Island itself. For the smallest state with the longest name (the full name is "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations"), we have our share of quirks and weirdness. Quahogs, cabinets, grinders and Del's lemonade are all indigenous to the Ocean State. So are some fabulous resources for genealogists, if you know where to find them. We have almost 400 years of family history to delve into and explore, and I hope to acclimate folks to how things work and where to find the best resources here in "Rogue's Island." Some topics that I'll explore in future posts include repositories and libraries, societies, newspapers, court records, ethnic groups and other resources that are available to researchers tracking family history. I'll also be putting together a list of the best websites to explore Rhode Island genealogical data, stay tuned for more!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05026995177421537374noreply@blogger.com4
